Our visit to Washington, DC was a quick trip and in a sense bitter sweet. The purpose of the trip was actually to honor my grandfather. He passed away a few months ago, a day shy of his 91st birthday, and this past Friday he was interred in Arlington National Cemetery with full honors befitting his rank as an officer. It was amazing to witness this phenomenal ceremony with a full military band, horse drawn caisson, an escort of guards of honor, and a volley of shots fired in his honor. He was incredibly proud to have served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, both as an American and as a Jew. For this, and many other reason, I always thought of him as an incredible man. To see his country honor him in this manner and acknowledge him as the great man that his family always thought of him as, was something indescribable. The trip also gave me a chance to see one of my maids-0f-honor and relive our university days as sorority girls. From overly sugary margaritas at our favorite mexican place that was the scene of many a crazy night (they were never adverse to us jumping behind the bar to show the bartenders how to mix our favorite shots), to pulling out our souvenir sweatpants from Formal 2006 ( Lo we missed you!), and a delicious morning after brunch, this quick trip to DC was just what I needed to escape the paper writing madness that I’m currently in.
