Like many people I know, I’ve made a significant shift in my clothing purchasing habits over the years. While I’ve always been a big proponent of investing in high quality pieces that stand the test of time, during much of my twenties I also loved a good fast-fashion buy. It was the perfect way to embrace fleeting trends without breaking the bank. However, as the world started to become more aware of the impact of fast-fashion, I started to shift away from these purchases. While I still love a good Zara or H&M find on a rare occasion, I try to be very mindful of the pieces I buy. I look for fabrics that are of a better quality, and construction that is sturdy to avoid the pieces contributing to the staggering amount of clothing waste that occurs each year. I’ve also taken to shopping my closet to give new life to the pieces that I already own.
Thankfully, my maxim of investing in classic quality items has paid off. I’m also a firm believer in taking care of my pieces to extend their life. I store my quality shoes and bags in their original boxes and dust bags to protect them and make a point of resoling shoes when the time comes. For quality garments, I make sure to follow their care instructions and use gentle cleaning methods on them. And for knits, I make sure to store them safely in lidded bins and wash them with The Laundress products (I swear by the Wool and Cashmere detergent and spray) to maintain their integrity. By taking these extra steps, I’ve been able to preserve the quality of the beautiful pieces that I’ve collected over many years. And because of this, I’ve been able to enjoy shopping my closet and creating new looks with old favourites.
