Neil Scibelli is a rare breed of individual. He’s young, insanely talented, charming, and down to earth to boot. He’s also pretty damn handsome and well-dressed but that’s besides the point. He’s emerged as one of the true talents in the beauty world and has distinguished himself as one of the go-to artists for celebrities and the fashion world. One of my New York Fashion Week highlights was seeing Neil at work with my favorite makeup line Jouer as hey keyed the makeup look for the Kate Spade presentation for this third year in a row. As as a national makeup artist for this highly regarded beauty line, and with his own personal successes, I couldn’t think of a better person to chat with to give you darlings a one-on-one with a beauty guru.
Do you have any tips for taking the makeup looks we’re seeing on the runway and making them real world appropriate?
I think there are definitely ways to take runway looks and making them your own. You can tone the colors down to your comfort level – or you can just choose to be brave and just replicate the look! Confidence is key for wearing them.
What are your makeup bag must haves?
Makeup bag must-haves for my clients… Lip enhancer by jouer cosmetics: its hydrating and gives a high shine. A great mascara (Kevin Aucoin Volumizing is my go-to): if nothing else, you can’t go wrong with big, bold lashes. A matte translucent powder (jouer translucent mattifying powder): a great touch-up product for your t-zone when your on the go.
You created such a beautiful fresh beauty look with Jouer for the Kate Spade Spring/Summer 2014 presentation, any tips or tricks for achieving the look of flawless glowing skin like the models?
Thank you! I used Jouer ‘Matte moisture tint’ on all the models skin. The formula keeps your skin matte but has a beautiful mouse-like consistency. It’s like an airbrush finish!
We all have our battles with under eye dark circles thanks to late nights, lack of sleep, or one too many glasses of champagne… Any helpful suggestions for making the dreaded dark circles disappear
My friends at Alchimie Forever Skincare make a ‘Rejuvenating eye balm’. It’s a fabulous under-eye cream with actual blueberries in it – which helps to promote circulation under the eyes. I also love Peter Thomas Roth’s Power K eye treatment – which is a more clinical approach to treating dark circles with a high content of Vitamin K. You can also just opt to sleep on your back to avoid cutting off circulation to your face 🙂
How do you suggest turning daytime makeup into an evening look for those leaving the office and heading right out on the town?
You can always add a darker crease color to your shadow or amp-up your lip color to turn your daytime makeup look into night. It’s as easy as that!
What is your biggest makeup faux pas and how can we avoid it?
The wrong foundation color drives me crazy. Match your neck color! Test your foundation shade on your lower jaw area to make sure it matches your complexion. Also– dont forget to blend your bronzer into your neck so you don’t create a mask effect.
You’ve become such a leader in the beauty field working with some of the top celebrities and brands. How did you find yourself in the beauty world and do you have any helpful advice or suggestions for aspiring makeup artists?
Why thank you! I’ve alway been attracted to art from an early age. My grandfather was a painter and I literally grew up in the art studio with him, which definitely exposed me to the career I have today. I would say practice your craft A LOT! Try different looks on as many faces as possible. I freelanced for different makeup companies growing up, to get hands-on. I also assisted well-known makeup artists, which helped expose me to a higher level of work. Get involved on-set, even as a volunteer assistant, so that you understand what happens on set. Other than that, give it your all!
