This past week I finally made it to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts for their retrospective on the work of Jean Paul Gaultier, the enfant terrible of the fashion world. With 140 pieces from his various collections, film clips, sketches and photographs this was a wonderful representation of one of the greatest designers of the 20th century. Broken up into six rooms that represent various themes to Gaultier’s work, the visitor is walked through The Odyssey of Jean Paul Gaultier, The Boudoir, Skin Deep, Punk Cancan, Urban Jungle, and Metropolis. My only complaint was that I wish the curator had provided more information about the pieces and the collections they came from. One of the aspects of Gaultier’s work that I am so drawn to is the inspiration and motivation behind his designs; one was left wanting to know more when viewing the exhibit. However, the exhibit is a wonderful cross section of some of his most iconic collections and shouldn’t be missed. Make sure to check it out before October 2nd when it closes!
