Since first launching WestmountFashionista almost a decade ago, I have always loved championing the Canadian fashion community. Montreal-based designers and lines in particular hold a special place in my heart and my wardrobe. I’m constantly impressed by the incredible talent that calls Montreal home, and always love discovering new-to-me designers and lines. I’m so thrilled to share GAZELLES with all of you – a stunning line and the talented designer behind it that I recently had the pleasure of discovering.
Designer Habi Gerba brings an elegant and classic eye to her designs. The beautiful separates that make up her collections for GAZELLES are an exquisite combination of refinement and accessibility. They show a love of quality over quantity and a nod to the beauty of strength. Lines are clean and crisp, but far from stuffy or dull, and there are delicate feminine touches found throughout.
Habi graciously agreed to an interview and I’m so thrilled to share it below!
For those interested in shopping GAZELLES, you can do so via appointment at the boutique and online.
What inspired you to launch GAZELLES?
From the age of 16, I started following my mother in her business meetings and meeting women in high management positions. Thats when the trigger really happened. I fell in love with the strength and ambition that some women have. I wanted to contribute my way to their success, my way being by dressing them.
Who is the GAZELLES client?
The Gazelles woman is an elegant, ambitious and charismatic woman. Not afraid to dream and dare.
Where do you find inspiration for your collections?
My biggest source of inspiration comes from my clients. It is the woman who gives life to a garment and not the other way around. The names of the pieces often bear the name of the client who inspired me to create it.
As a female designer and entrepreneur, your success is a wonderful inspiration and must have come with significant hard work. Is there a piece of advice you received before or when you started your line that you found particularly useful or helpful?
Never stop learning and always keep an eye open for opportunities!
What are the absolute must have pieces from GAZELLES?
The silk blouse. A delicate, feminine and comfortable way to stay professional without having to wear a blazer
You studied both fashion design and business management, do you find this combination of studies aided your success as a designer?
For me it was very important, essential. I am a designer yes but a huge part of my time is devoted to management. Creating is good … surviving is better!
GAZELLES exudes both femininity and strength, was this something that you intentionally set out to encapsulate with your pieces?
Yes absolutely! I chose this name because for me the gazelle was the animal that most represents my clients. Elegance and strength in a difficult environment.
What excites you about the fashion world right now?
Good question, I’ll say the growing interest of women in the high-end clothing made in Quebec.
