For Kim Jones’ second FENDI Haute Couture collection, he masterfully melded the rich history of Rome and its inhabitants with the gaze of the Roman film director and writer Pier Paolo Pasolini. Jones notes, “Pasolini observed Rome become modern – and that is what is interesting to me: connecting eras, the old with the new, the past with the present.” And Jones did just that with the Fall/Winter 2021/2022 Haute Couture collection. While the pieces were imbued with what seemed like design inspired references to Rome’s great historical eras and their architecture, they also had an almost futuristic feel to them as well.
Garments are adorned with mosaic-like embellishments and the collection’s exquisite draping is reminiscent of the marble statues of antiquity. Feathers, intricate appliqué, delicate lace, and sparkling beading are also found throughout the collection lending a decidedly glamorous feel to the collection as befitting the legendary Italian design house. Sumptuous evening gowns befitting a Teatro La Scala opera diva are some of the most spectacular pieces of this all together incredible collection.
As for accessories, sometimes an overlooked component of a Haute Couture collection, the FENDI Haute Couture collection did not disappoint. Delicate little minaudières featured the house’s iconic logo and incredibly intricate detailing and embellishments. One even featured a mosaic that wouldn’t have been out of place in a senator’s home during the Roman Empire. Shoes were encrusted with mosaic-like pieces as well and had a very architectural feel about them. As for bijoux, it was logo-centric and featured more nods to iconic Italian design elements like terrazzo.
