Over two hundred years old and in its third century of operation, Congress Hall in Cape May, New Jersey is known as America’s first seaside resort. Opened in 1816 as a simple boarding house, Congress Hall quickly became one of the most notable holiday destinations in 19th Century America, rivalling tony Newport and Saratoga. It even hosted multiple presidential stays with President Benjamin Harris even calling it his “Summer White House” since he conducted affairs of state from the premises. While the grand old building went through some difficult years during the early 20th century, the current owners purchased it in 1995 and set out to revitalize the property. After an extensive renovation in the early 2000s, the grande dame of Cape May was returned to her full glory. With it’s beautiful Victorian architecture and charmingly appointed guest rooms, it’s a true gem.
Cape May is a beautiful seaside town tucked away on the Jersey shore away from the glitz of Atlantic City and the more party-oriented towns that were depicted on MTVs much loved and much maligned Jersey Shore. The town still features many of its original Victorian properties lending it a story book charm. Incredibly family friendly, Cape May offers delicious dining, an abundance of outdoor activities, and boutique shopping. Congress Hall house’s one of the town’s most popular restaurants, The Blue Pig Tavern.
We had the pleasure of checking into Congress Hall for a 3 night stay as a family and were also joined by my parents. We stayed in a Deluxe Room and loved the ample space it gave us even with a young child and a husband who needed to still conduct business. With a view overlooking the hotel’s expansive back lawn and onto the beach front, the room was serene and totally inviting. We enjoyed days by the pool and beach, and exploring the town and evenings dining out. One of the highlights was booking a private cabana on the beach that allowed us to have a comfortable shaded space and plush loungers for relaxing. I also loved that they offered food and beverage service directly to the cabana so we could each seaside dining. And speaking of food and beverage service, we enjoyed many a breakfast, lunch, and dinner at The Blue Pig tavern. Enjoying it so much, we kept returning to it during our stay. Featuring excellent service, a delicious menu featuring many fresh local ingredients, it was incredibly family-friendly while still being refined. In fact, I would say the entire property embraces this feeling. They’re incredibly welcoming to their younger guests and feature many charming activities and amenities that even the littlest ones will enjoy, like evening fetes featuring an adorable mini train ride and ice cream. However, the hotel is just as welcoming and pampering for their older guests, with its spa and incredible dining and cocktail options. It’s truly a wonderful property to enjoy as a family, a couple, or even for a girls weekend! Needless to say, I’m so looking forward to returning once we can cross the border with ease.
