My love for France is admittedly rather obvious. From its glittering capital, to its charming small towns and villages, it’s truly a beautiful country. One of my favorite visits was when Darling Husband and I spent two weeks driving through Normandy and the Loire Valley. We wound our way from Paris to Brittany for a wedding, and then made our way along the Northern coast and down into the Loire. While in the Normandy region, I knew I wanted to stay in a historic Château and ended up coming across the Château de Bénéauville during my hunt for the perfect property. And perfect it was darlings! Nestled in Bavent, a commune in the Calvados department of the Normandy region, its construction began in 1589. Its period rooms and furnishings have been lovingly preserved by its current owners, Monsieur and Madame Augais, who welcome their guests warmly and graciously, frequently with the Château’s dogs at their sides. With gorgeous sprawling grounds, a beautifully done pool area, and exquisite interiors, the Château de Bénéauville is a truly luxurious property.
While it still retains its historic charm and beauty, the Château has been perfectly modernized where necessary. We stayed in the stunning Chambre Job, and with its view of the grounds, it was both beautiful and relaxing. The room is named after the incredible stone fireplace that dominates one wall of the suite, dated 1593 – it’s a phenomenal piece of history that is original to the Château. Spacious and decorated impeccably with period pieces, it was both grand yet at the same time welcoming and comfortable. Its large bed looks out over the back of the expansive property and the room is appointed perfectly. With distinct spaces for sleeping, relaxing, and even sneaking in a little work (a certain Darling Husband might have closed a deal during our stay), you could easily spend your time simply enjoying this gorgeous suite. As for the bathroom, the amenities were split between a water closet and a room dedicated to housing a luxurious soaking tub.
Breakfast is included in the stay and quickly became something that Darling Husband and I looked forward to each morning. Held in the gracious dining room, it was made up of market fresh goodies like local fruits, cheeses, and meats, and well as homemade yogurt, preserves, and delicious baked goods. Served with fresh squeezed juice, coffee and tea, it was the perfect way to start our day before venturing off into the neighboring towns and villages.
Château de Bénéauville’s location is ideal for exploring the Normandy region and made visiting Mont Saint-Michel, the D-Day beaches, and the Bayeux Cathedral and tapestry quite easy. Not only welcoming to couples and single adult travelers, the Château is also family friendly. I can’t wait to return with madam for another stay at this stunning property and to explore more of this beautiful region of France!
