CHANEL Métiers d’art 2026: A Cinematic Love Letter to New York
There are certain CHANEL moments that feel instantly iconic. The Métiers d’art 2026 collection is one of them. Presented as Matthieu Blazy’s debut Métiers d’art outing for the Maison, the collection unfolds as a richly layered narrative set against the endlessly fascinating backdrop of the New York City subway. According to Blazy, this space is a crossroads of lives and stories, a democratic runway where style is as varied and vibrant as the city itself. This idea becomes the heartbeat of the collection. It is both a love letter to New York and a testament to the power of craftsmanship that defines the Métiers d’art tradition.

What captivated me immediately was the cinematic sensibility that runs through the collection. Blazy opens the door to a world where socialites brush shoulders with students, showgirls, superheroes, and the proverbial ladies who lunch. It is all the glitter and grit of New York distilled into clothing. A place where Coco Chanel herself appears as a character in the visual story, seamlessly weaving the past and present together. The narrative moves playfully through eras from the 1920s to the 2020s, blending Art Deco indulgence with modern ease. The result is a joyful and clever fusion of elevated technique and pop style sensibility with the crafts of the Maison d’art houses at its core.

The history behind the collection gives it an even richer resonance. Blazy draws from Gabrielle Chanel’s own time spent in New York in 1931 during her travels to and from Hollywood. While her meetings with film executives were the original purpose of her journey, it was the style she discovered downtown that left the deepest impact. She saw New Yorkers interpreting the Chanel aesthetic in their own spirited ways. This unexpected embrace of her vision renewed her confidence in the democratic appeal of her designs. It was one of the reasons the Maison has maintained such a lasting affection for the city. Chanel loves New York, and this collection makes that sentiment shine through beautifully.

The looks themselves were a standout highlight for me. Blazy’s ability to take foundational CHANEL codes and refresh them with a modern eye feels incredibly exciting. There is a lingerie inspired denim that is paired with intricate embroidery, creating a sort of New York western moment that feels both whimsical and sophisticated. A reimagined Art Deco archive dress appears with embroidery by Lesage and featherwork by Lemarié, styled unexpectedly with illusion chinos for a newly invented flapper spirit. Masculine motifs also get their own transformation. The classic men’s shirt is reinterpreted yet again, weighted by a CHANEL chain, while lumberjack flannel becomes an opulent wool bouclé tweed. These pieces feel inventive while still deeply grounded in the savoir-faire that defines the Maison.

There is also a cheeky playfulness at work. Minaudières appear as oysters hiding pearls, monkey nuts, apples, and reinterpretations of tourist trinkets that have been elevated into gleaming jewels. The artisans at Goossens bring glass cabochons and hummingbird motifs to life. Even the linings of garments reveal tiny worlds filled with hand-painted details, including Coco Chanel walking her dog against the Manhattan skyline. It is these thoughtful secrets that remind you that Métiers d’art is as much about emotion as it is about exceptional craft.

One of my favourite looks was a slubbed leopard tweed ensemble inspired by the mythical and mysterious urban animal world of the city. Handwoven by Lesage, the textile alone is a work of art. Another highlight was a bias cut slip embroidered with shimmering fish in an Art Deco motif crafted by Atelier Montex. The entire collection is anchored by classic CHANEL slingbacks from Massaro crafted in kidskin or updated with a spotted shearling finish that brings them decisively into the present. Each outfit feels like its own story, told through craftsmanship, personality, and bold imagination.

What I find particularly thrilling about this collection is Blazy’s interpretation of the CHANEL woman. His vision is fresh, modern, and delightfully unexpected, yet it always remains faithful to the poetic history of the Maison. He honours the codes, but he also invites us to see them through a new lens. As someone who deeply appreciates the enduring elegance of CHANEL, I find his perspective energizing. It is a new chapter that feels perfectly aligned with the past while confidently stepping into the future.

The CHANEL Métiers d’art 2026 collection is more than clothing. It is a beautifully crafted dialogue between Paris and New York, between tradition and reinvention. It tells a story that feels distinctly CHANEL, filled with romance, wit, craftsmanship, and timeless allure.
