The Parisian Haute Couture shows were held last week and the eyes on the fashion world were on Karl Lagerfeld and the venerable house of CHANEL. Held twice a year, January and July, these shows showcase some of the most incredible pieces for the coming season. As a member of the vaunted Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, CHANEL is one of the very few houses that produce the luxurious creations that can legally be called Haute Couture. Strict rules govern the creation of these exclusive creations resulting in garments that are truly works of art. From sumptuous fabrics to intricate hand-beading and stitching, the looks that Monsieur Lagerfeld debuted as part of the F/W 2015/16 3D Collection were spectacular feats of design and construction.
The Grand Palais was turned into the most exclusive casino in the world with mega celebrities like Chanel’s latest brand ambassador Lily Rose Depp playing blackjack in Le Cercle Privé as models walked the room. Dressed in gowns specially made for the show, these favorites of Lagerfeld were also adorned with platinum and diamond creations that were re-editions of Mademoiselle Chanel’s legendary “Bijoux de Diamants” collection.
The 3D collection was so named because of the merging of exquisite traditional Haute Couture methods with the use of state-of-the-art technology. Utilizing a selective laser sintering technique, suits were literally made in 3D and came painted, embroidered, beaded, braided in leather and lined in satin. The were decidedly structured and had a strength about them. One of the most iconic pieces of the 20th century, the classic CHANEL jacket, has quite surely been brought into the 21st century.
Evening wear was done in sumptuous fabrics like duchess satin, organza, chiffon, and taffeta and richly adorned with feathers, sequined and beaded embroideries, and delicate applications. Just as with the suits, these pieces had a feel of strength and power while still embracing an elegant femininity. As for the traditional finale of the bride, Lagerfeld created a thoroughly modern white tuxedo paired with a long embroidered tulle veil.
