Presented via a stunning film staged by the famed duo of Inez & Vinoodh, the CHANEL Fall Winter 2021 Ready to Wear collection is another triumph for Virginie Viard. The House of CHANEL is not only know for spectacular collections but also for spectacular shows. Traditionally held at Paris’ Grand Palais, CHANEL’s show sets are things of wonder and creativity. Under the glass dome of the Grand Palais, the House has recreated sumptuous gardens, snow covered Alpine villages, sandy beaches with gently lapping waves, the rooftops of Paris, and an actual working rocket ship to name only a few. However, this season Viard took the show to the legendary Castel. Tucked away on the Rue Princesse in Paris’ tony Saint-Germaine-des-Prés, this private members club proved to be the perfect backdrop to the collection. Speaking of her inspiration for the mood and feel of the collection and presentation, Viard noted “I love contrasts, so for the more voluminous winter pieces, I wanted a small space. I don’t know if this is because of the times we live in, but I wanted something warm, lively. I imagined the models doing a show for themselves, going from room to room, crossing each other in staircases, piling their coats up in the cloakroom and going up to the next floor to get changed. And I thought of the shows that Karl would tell me about, back in the day, a long time ago, when the models would dress themselves and do their own make-up.”
The CHANEL Fall Winter 2021 Ready to Wear exudes elegant 70s maximalism with a hint of 90s grunge. One can easily picture Bianca Jagger donning the finale gold trench, or long time House ambassador Stella Tennant bringing her unique style to the pieces. Viard even slips in a nod to ski holidays with quilted boiler and ski suits and chic knits. This contrast between 70s Parisian glamour and après-ski style is carried throughout the collection. Viard plays with volume and materials. An oversized rich tweed greatcoat and matching knee-length skirt is paired with the most delicate sheer black slip dress. Delicate little mini dresses are paired with quilted boots and menswear inspired trousers are paired with dainty pearl braces. The iconic CHANEL tweed suit is imaged in a pretty purple pastel with a quilted trim on the skirt and blazer and oversized lapels.
