The CHANNEL Cruise 2023–24 collection was recently unveiled, and it brought the famed French fashion House to Los Angeles for the second time in the Maison’s history. In 1931, Coco Chanel was invited by studio head Samuel Goldwyn to come to Hollywood to dress some of the silver screen’s leading ladies on camera and off. While in California, she created costumes for multiple films and stars. Most notably, her work for 1931’s Tonight or Never, starring Gloria Swanson, received great acclaim, particularly the evening gowns worn by Swanson in the film.
With the CHANEL Cruise 2023/24 collection, Creative Director Virginie Viard pays homage to Gabrielle Chanel’s foray into the world of Hollywood. The collection references the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s, while imbuing it with the colour and vibrancy of the 1970s and 1980s. Viard notes, “Between a tribute to the glamour of great film stars and evoking the world of fun to be had with aerobics, sports and roller skating, between the dream on one hand and what you want to wear on the other, it’s all a question of balance.” What results is a playfully fun collection that’s classic Hollywood glamour meets sunny Valley girl.
Rhinestone-covered mini-shorts and jumpsuits, embroidered bustier and little tank tops, mod inspired suits, bathrobes and casual pyjamas, 1930s-style shoes and their disco variations, crêpe de chine and terrycloth, swimsuits, wrap-around tops, legwarmers and evening dresses: it’s all about the collective imagination as the history and codes of CHANEL join the dance. Motifs like black and gold chevrons, disco balls, milkshakes, roller skates and coconut palms are found across fabrications of classic Chanel white and black as well as sunshine like colours like pink and gold.
Viard said of the collection, “the idea is to offer a breath of fresh air, a voyage, a light-hearted and happy fantasy” and that’s just what she did with the relaxed glamour of the CHANEL Cruise 2023/24 collection.
